Many of the works in this collection are based on still life elements that I have gathered over many years, all of which have captured my interest and attention for one reason or another. Some of the objects I am drawn to represent the human form in various ways such as masks, puppets, dolls, and mannequins, whole or in fragments. Natural forms such as roots and branches also contribute a great deal to my work. Their abstract sculptural qualities are a source of endless fascination to me, especially when placed with other forms that contrast or seem unrelated. These and many more miscellaneous collected items are the characters that inhabit my studio and my artistic life. On the shelves, objects often find themselves placed together randomly in the service of saving precious space. When seen in such close proximity they take on relationships of their own. Other times they are formally arranged into relationships that I enjoy creating.

The still life genre is appealing to me because of its accessibility. It allows me to respond directly and spontaneously to what is before me. In working from observed reality I’m able to forge a personal connection with my subject matter. Also on display are works of papier colle’ which is a fancy art word for “pasted paper”.

These are collage compositions using printmaking techniques. They represent my love of ink on paper. Over the past eighteen years I have developed a deep interest in making pottery. I am particularly attracted to raku techniques like the ones seen in this show. Combining the geometric form of the thrown pot with the organic quality of the surface treatment creates an aesthetic that I find especially compelling. The results are both controlled and to some extent left to chance, always retaining some element of surprise.
